Tuesday evening we planned to go up Table Mountain and view the sunset. Another huge disappointment, they closed 5 minutes before we arrived:(

Tuesday was full of disappointments, we had booked to take a trip to Robin Island but unfortunately there was a strike with the workers and so our trip was cancelled. However. we made the best of the day. Above are some fun things we did.

4TH DAY IN SOUTH AFRICA

We stayed in a three Bedroomed, three Bathroomed apartment that was so luxurious. Every Bedroom had it's own access to the balcony. Although this picture is blurred it shows the beautiful view from the balcony. The apartment was a block away from Cape Town Waterfront.

We climbed up to the top of Cape Point, and saw some beautiful views of where the two oceans meet.

After climbing up Cape Point, we all went to the beach but only Eric and Cindy braved the freezing ocean. The ocean water in Cape Town is almost as cold as the ocean water in San Fransisco. The reason for this is the cold Southern Benguela Current washes onto the shores of Cape Town.

After the "braai" at Charleen's home on Sunday we hurried to the airport and took a flight to Cape Town. Candice's (Garry's 2nd child) boyfriend is a pilot and he organised for George to fly in the cockpit. That was one of the highlights of the holiday for George! We arrived in Cape Town at approx. 7p.m. Sunday evening and after settling into our apartment we went and had supper on the V & A Waterfront. Above are some photo's of the things we did on Monday.

3RD DAY IN SOUTH AFRICA

This was the first home George and I purchased. 14 Cactus Street, Nigel.

Our home in Selcourt, 10 Willoughby Rd. We had just replaced the children's bathroom and then we moved to America. We did not have the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of our labors.

Nigel Primary School's Kindergarten class where Renata Stefani and I taught. Looks very different, although they have the same playground equipment we purchased. We had colourful disney characters painted on the classroom walls. My classroom theme was 'The Bears Lair' , the spare classroom was 'The Mouse House' and Renata's classroom was 'The Lions Den'.

All my children went to Nigel Primary School (grade 1 to grade 7). Funny because it is the same school I went to (grade 2 to grade 7). I met my lifelong friends Eileen (in 2nd grade) and Bonny (in 3rd grade).
It was in this park in Selcourt that Samantha was riding a quad when she had an accident that frightened the heck out of me and her dad. Garreth proved to be a hero that day when he jumped over the fence of the home of friends, t0 use their telephone (these were the days before every child owned a cell). He called an ambulance and then he called George. We were on our way to Johannesburg when we received the call. It was the only time I didn't complain at George for speeding. All those who know me will thing this funny:)

We didn't go to church, which is very unusual, because S.A. wards and branches had general conference which we had seen the week before. So feeling like a fish out of water, we spent the day reminiscing by visiting places from the past. Later on Sunday afternoon Charleen and Sias envited us to a "braai". Delicious, especially the borewors, potjiebread, and desserts.

Samantha and Rebecca were friends when they were both in diapers. During their kindergarten and primary school years they were inseperable and then we moved to America.

After our open house, George and I stayed at my brother Garry's home. We slept through the night and only woke up at 11am the next day. Four of us rushed off to Rebecca Percival's wedding while Cindy spent the afternoon visiting her good friend Emma. Above are some photo's of the stunning bride. We had fun at the reception and enjoyed the company of many friends.

George had arrived in South Africa the day before in order to make last minute preperations for the open house. We went from the airport to the open house. On Christmas Eve we, true to tradition, went around the neighbourhood to see how some folk decorate their home. This picture of our favourite does not do justice. I overheard someone ask the owner of the home if he will stop the annual decorations. He answered "Yes, when people stop coming to see it" Lesson I learned = It's a time of giving, sharing and spreading joy. Also learned that the more effort we put into giving, sharing and spreading joy, the greater our joy.

Santa gave me an I Phone. I usually don't like gadgets like this but it will be nice when all our children have one. It will be nice to see my grandchildren and children anytime I want.

Santa gave George a Merc C300. My wonderful husband deserves this. He gives up so much for

me. HOPE ALL OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS HAD A WONDERFUL DAY.

My car is only a little over two years old but it broke down and needed an expensive repair (gear box). I felt so lost without it. My favourite friend in California moved away. Christina I feel lost without you. News that Kerry is still comatosed doesn't do much to brighten the day. It's good to have my car back as good as new, but I do wish that the other 'once apon a time' would have a 'happy ever after'

Our Utah granddaughters came to visit for two weeks. We treated ourselves in Los Angeles and spent our days shopping for Princess Dresses, face painting, movies, swimming and tanning at the Beach and a visit to Disneyland.

Funny moments: a) Little Sharon became so comfortable in the water she believed that she could swim without floaties. Panicky I watched while she took a giant leap into deep water. Fully clothed I jumped into the water and lifted her out by grasping her hair. (No time to think of my actions). Her response was "I'm going to tell my mommy that you pulled my hair!" :-) b) Kamryn said to a lady who wore a scarf (doek) around her head in the hot tub, "Are you a pirate?":-) Out of the mouths of babes!

How time flies. Twenty four years ago I held a perfect baby girl in my arms and she has had me wrapped around her fingers ever since. Lucky for me, she was never demanding, or selfish. Just the opposite. She was the calmest, happiest, easiest baby to take care of. All she seemed to need was to watch me going about my daily housewife chores. After growing a few years, she continued to show her wonderful disposition. I remember one Christmas asking the children to write their gift list letter to Santa. All my youngest daughter wanted was a set of false nails. Once I went with George to Taiwan for ten days and it broke my heart to leave my young daughter behind. Before saying goodbye she tucked a letter into the palm of my hand and told me that I could not open it until I was on the airplane. The letter was a love letter to her mommy, with a plea to come home safely. When we arrived in America, she found a job working for a dentist, so that she could be financially independent. She was only sixteen years old. She is now the best dental assistant around. Cindy, you are the only one of my children that was born under the covenant. I believe that you are a special gift from our Heavenly Father. I love you dearly.

It was with much sadness that we heard that Alex passed away. He touched the lives of all who passed his way. In our travels we have met many wonderful people, but Alex was one of a very special kind. Reasons why we love him:
- He had the ability to love people unconditionally.
- He possessed the pure love of Christ (charity).
- He was our very best friend.
- He was one of the few people we could go on vacation with and have fun.
- When we lived in South Africa, he would often just pop in for a visit, and would bring the
children chocolate or candy.
- He loved the gospel and lived his religion.
- We first became friends when we lived in Nigel and he was our home teacher. He never
missed a month and would spend quality time with our family.
- He was an amazing bishop.
- He was a man without guile.
- He was a wonderful father. I would watch how Elra's eyes would light up when he walked into
his home.
- He was a wonderful example.
- He is married to the most amazing person I know.

180th SEMI ANNUAL GENERAL CONFERENCE PRIESTHOOD SESSION

Yesterday George and I were travelling to Utah (Melissa and my precious grandchildren were going home after visiting California for 10 days) when I received a phone call from Garreth. He said, "Mom, I am living your dream for me. I am sitting and watching general conference AND eating vegetables!" Wow, what can I say except "Thank you, Jessica!" Also thanks to Rod Cain (a wonderful member of our ward) I have these pictures of Dan singing in the priesthood session. Dan has an amazing ability to sing. He is my American Idol. Garreth is my South African Idol. I love you my son.

TRIP TO FLORIDA

George and I went for a few days to Florida, and while he worked, I played! I went to the Kennedy Space Center (An absolute MUST if you are in the area of Orlando!). I also went to Disney World's Magic Kingdom and Sea World. One evening George and I went to see a live show (Blue Man Group) at Universal Studio's. We also went to Cocoa Beach on the Atlantic Ocean, which reminded me a little of the Beaches in South Africa, and Clearwater Bay on the Gulf of Mexico (This was one of the nicest beaches I've seen, the sea sand was white and like baby powder). I only have two regrets about our trip to Florida. First and most important, if I could turn back the clock of time, I would take Katie (my oldest granddaughter) with me. The second regret is that we lost our camara and while I don't care about the camara, I wish I had the photo's we had taken of our trip. The day before we went to Florida, Ryan Paddock came over to our home and spent the night with us - I'm forgiven!

Last week I drove up to Utah with a church friend and flew home five days later.

On Tuesday I took the girls to the Life Science museum close to B.Y.U. Baby Sharon is such a precious character!

On Monday we went down the slopes on tubes.

Katie and Sharon love their uncle and Jess.

After church we went to Jessica's parents home for lunch. Garreth and Jess spoke in their ward. They gave inspiring talks!

On Saturday evening we went to Melissa's ward talent show. My grandaughter were so cute. (See The Combs Family Blog)

Kyle is one month old.

On Friday we took the girls to the Fun Factory. They came home exhausted!

At Sharon's third birthday party. You wouldn't say Melissa had just had a baby six days prior.

The Birthday girl. Some reasons why I love this child. She is smart, she is spunky, she is cute, she is loyal to her family, she can sit quietly during sacrament meeting, she loves learning new things, with a little persuasion she will eat her vegetables and she is beautiful.

George, Cindy, Eric, Sam, Kamryn and Dylan came to Utah for Kyle's blessing and to celebrate Sharon Combs birthday. George underestimated the fuel and ran out about a mile from the gas station. Eric saved the day by jogging to bring some.

One of the highlights was a visit to Garreth's Law School. Here is his picture with the rest of the CLASS OF 2012. I'm so proud!

Sam and Eric spent a few days with Garreth and Jess in Las Vegas (for a 5 day Rugby tournament) and I took care of Kamryn and Dylan. I cannot keep oupa (or Kamryn) out of that Disney store.

Our children gave us tickets to the live show "Wicked" for Christmas (that doesn't sound right)! It was such a treat! Thanks to my precious children for a lovely evening. Dad and I need to do this more often. We wanted to have supper at a wonderful crepe restaurant but instead went to the famous Market Street Grill.

On the way home I asked Kami a series of questions starting with, "What did you enjoy the most today ? Was it having fun with oupa?" She said "No!"

"Did you enjoy the Ferry the most?" She said, "No!"

"Did you like chasing the pigeons most?" She said "No!"

"Did you like the Xmas tree best?" She said "No!"

"Did you like the 'Hindenburg' most?" She said "No!"

"Did you like the merry-go-round (carousel) most?" She said "No!"

"Did you like going to the aquarium best?" She said "No!"

" Did you like touching the sharks and the stingray best?" She said "No!"

"Did you like touching the star fish best?" She said "No!"

"Did you like the tin men best?" She said "No!"

"Did you like the cable car best?" She said "No!"

Kami said "I liked the skeleton man best!"

At the end of the day as we put the children in the car, Kami started crying. She said, "I want to go back to the merry-go-round!"

Twenty eight years ago I held a baby boy in my arms and felt the overwhelming love that only a mother can. As that baby grew to boyhood I felt the overwhelming need to protect him like only a mother would. As boyhood changed to teenager, I felt the overwhelming desire to teach him to make good choices, like only a mother would. As teenager grew to manhood I feel an overwhelming pride, like any mother should. Garreth, thank you for making me so proud. You have become everything, and more than I had hoped you would. You are just like your dad, and I feel like the luckiest person on earth. You are a wonderful son, husband, brother, uncle and I know that you will be the best dad. I love you!

George and I spent the Thanksgiving week in Paradise.. or the Hawaian Island of Oahu.

We woke up early on Tuesday the 24th November. Here we are waiting impatiently for our flight to Hawaii. We had just enjoyed a breakfast at San Francisco airport.

Best way to cruise around the island.... in a Mustang Convertible.

On Tuesday after unpacking and settling into the hotel. We went to swim at Waikiki Beach. I have never seen ocean water so blue and clean as in Hawaii. Crystal clear!

On Wednesday we travelled up the Western side of the Island until we reached Sandy Beach. The waves were at least 26 feet high. I heard that they sometimes reach 30 feet. George braved the waves but it proved too violent for him I have never seen waves as big as these. Unbeknown to me I was being filmed while I read 'Falling Leaves' a true story about an unwanted Chinese girl.

On Thursday we went snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. We saw a variety to fish and corral.

On Friday we went to the Polynesian Culture Center on the North Eastern side of the island.

Saturday morning we went to movies and then did what I enjoy doing most.

On Saturday evening we took a stroll down 'Beach Walk'. Some shops on this road are Tiffany's, Gucci, Billabong, Couch (who would pay $1000 for a purse????), Rolex (cheapest watch was $4000), and even Ferrari!

On Sunday afternoon we browsed around Pearl Harbour.

On Sunday morning we went to Church. This chapel was built when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor.

On Monday (and Tuesday morning before going home) we bathed in Waikiki on my favourite beach.

Before I forget, I was on the news the day before Thanksgiving. We had been to the North Shore to see the huge waves and, they were interviewing this guy from Denver about the surfers. A new park opened 2 weeks ago just behind our house. She calls it the 'mummy park'. Can you guess why? It's her favorite park in the whole world.

We even went for a frozen yogurt and also to Pump It Up in my bicycle cart.

I call her baby Sharon, but she tells me she is not a baby. I then call her little Sharon, and she said, "I'm big not little'. She is now big Sharon (which by the way was my name) so I guess I'll have to be content with old Sharon!

Big Sharon has been visiting us for the past two weeks. It has been wonderful to bond with her. I adore her. She is so cute the other day oupa was giving her hugs and she said, "No oupa, dont tie me up".

Highlights of last week

- Having all my children and grandchildren around.
- Watching Cindy skilfully handle the go-cart and overtake almost everyone. Eric only managed
to pass her at the end of the race!
- Little Sharon staying at ouma and oupa's home for two extra weeks. During "trick or treat" she would be given candy but then she would hold up the bucket for more! A sweet tooth for a sweet little girl.
- Dylan was blessed last Sunday by his daddy, Eric.
- Kamryn blurted out "Well done daddy!" after the blessing. Everyone at church chuckled!
- Kathleen (Katie) and I had a long chat one evening while I tucked the children in bed. She told me all about her kindergarten class (she likes playtime...... she does not like phonics). She is reading beautifully all by herself.
- Enjoying a manicure and pedicure with Melissa and Jessica. The time together was enjoyed more than the manicure and pedicure.

Siemens gave George's office a make-over! New paint, carpets and furniture. It looks and smells so good. Friday's are casual days hence no collar and tie.

George celebrated the 29th aniversary of his 21st birthday last week. His department at work organised a fancy luncheon for everyone at work. They also had a cake made with his picture on. That evening Eric and Sam took us to P.F. Chang's as a birthday gift!

George thank you for making me want to be the best I can be. Thank you for my four beautiful children. Thank you for taking me to see all the 'chick flicks' even though you sleep throughout the movie. Thank you for loving me. I love you honey, happy 50th birthday.

George and I flew to San Diego on Friday morning and came home on Sunday evening. We stayed at the Hilton Hotel on the bay, walked along the beach, took a bus tour around the city, went to see two movies, swam in the ocean, cycled on hired beach cruisers along the island, and just had ton's of fun time together. Thank's my love for a perfect weekend!

After swimming in the ocean, we hired beach cruiser's and cycled around 'paradise'. The tall white building at the back is the Hilton Hotel.

I love to blog because not only does it help me to stay in touch with my mother, sister, friends, and nieces in South Africa, but it allows me the opportunity to find out how my children and grandchildren are doing. Because I also use it as a diary, I would like to share some news. Today George was called to serve as second councillor to the Sacramento Stake President. He will continue to also serve as a bishop of Laguna Creek 5th ward until a new bishop is called. One of my greatest fears when immigrating to the United States nine years ago was that we would not have the opportunity to serve. All these fears were unfounded. I know that I have a Heavenly Father who loves me. I recently stopped doing day-care and so will have more time to spend with my grandchildren. I love to be available to help out when my daughters need me. I also want to spend more time with my sweetheart George ( a week day lunch date every now and then will be a nice distraction). I feel so grateful for my four precious children, for their wonderful spouses, and for my beautiful grandchildren. Dylan is growing bigger everyday and as his other granny said, "There is no mistaking him for a girl". He has the biggest hands and feet I think I have ever seen on a baby! Baby Sharon is speaking clearly now and is just as spunky as me. Kamryn has stated preschool and loves it. Katie has started kindergarten (grade O) and can read and write now.

My first grandson Dylan was born on the 9/9/09 and if you don't think those numbers are fluke then let me add the time ................2....3....4 (2H34). He is absolutely perfect! I love him already! His weight was almost 8 lbs and his length almost 20 inch. That is a big baby for the Longs. Baby and mom are doing well. I will post pictures later this evening.

Labor Day Celebrations

After unloading the bicyle we began cycling on the bicycle trail. Only pedestrains, horses, cyclists, and skaters use this trail (no motorists). It is approx 50 km long. However, we only cycled about 35 km today. Notice the beautiful American River in the background.

Off loading the tandem before we began our 35 mile cycle along the trail next to the American River. Some of the most exquisite scene's in nature can be seen along this trail!

Soon after we began cycling we picked up a thorn. George changing the tyre. He comes totally prepared. Almost every cyclist that passed us asked if they could help. How impressive!

The tarred bicycle path ends at the Sacramento River, close to where the American and Sacramento rivers meet.

We locked our bicycle in Old Sacramento and walked over to the Imax Theater where we watched "Whales and Dolphins" in 3 D. An excellent documentary

One of the earliest Mormon pioneers to arrive in california was William B Ide. After the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Ide headed for Oregon with his wife Susan and five children. An old fur trapper at Fort Hall convinced him to go to California instead. They arrived at sutter's Fort on Oct 25, 1845. Soon afterwards Ide received word that the Mexicans were going to run the "Americanos" out of the area. He was one of a group of 30 men who rode to Sonoma and captured the Spanish General and his garrison of men. The group established the Republic of California and created a flag. They chose the grizzly bear, representing strength and unyielding resisstance as their emblem. Ide was chosen to serve as California's first and only president. However, 26 days later they turned the republic over to Captain Fremont an official of the United States of America.

Labor Day is a holiday we celebrate working by not working! I had hoped that my beautiful Samantha would spend some of labor day in labor, however Dylan knows better. Here are some pictures of how George and I celebrated the day.

Garreth and Jessica are visiting for a few day's before he start's law school at the University of Utah. The day began with us supporting Eric as he did a triathlon (long distant swimming, cycling, and running). They gave award's to the first five athlete's in his age group. He came sixth! Well done! Afterwards, we went to Raging Water's. I've posted some picture's below. Later that evening the girl's went to movies (Julie and Julia) while the guys babysat a sleepy Kamryn. I wish Cindy and Melissa (with her beautiful girls) were here. we really enjoy the laughter when our children are around eg. I received Charleen's bilingual (english and afrikaans) wedding invitation today . . While Sam and I were admiring the invite, Eric peeped over our shoulder and said, "Do South Africans get married in drag." Drag pronounced Draaaggg means Dress. I'm excited as Cindy and Rob will arrive later this week . They will be staying with us while they go to school. Cindy will also be employed partly for Eric.

I did not want to do this! My legs felt like jelly below my body. My heart was screaming loudly. The kid's would not let me walk off the slide. At the start of the ride I was free falling. For someone afraid of height's this was a never again experience.

The perfect ending to the perfect weekend. Watching Pocahontas with oupa while waiting for mommy and daddy to come pick her up.

A Week In Utah!

Monday took the Children to see Ice Age 2 but left early as it was way to scary for the little ones.
Tuesday the weather was overcast so we went to the indoor pool. Katie was amazing. She went down the high waterslide by herself. She is swimming like a pro.
Wednesday we took the children to the library. They love books. I went shopping at L.D.S. Bookstore.
Thursday we went to Tecano (Brazillian Resturant)
Friday we went to the outdoor pool. Later we went to an Indian Resturant that was frightfully expensive and really not worth it.
Saturday we went back to the outdoor pool. Summer time has come with a vengence. I am only comfortable in an airconditioned home, or in the pool.
Left Utah at ten on Saturday evening and arrived in Sacramento a little after ten that same day (an hour time difference).

Down by the sea!

George and I left early on Friday morning and arrived at noon in Los Angeles. It was Cindy's birthday. She got tennis raquets from Garreth and Jessica, Clothes from Sam and Eric, towels and a watch from Rob, and money from us. How time flies! It feels like only yesterday that I was changing her diapers. She was an angel baby, always content with a smile on her lovely face. We had a weekend filled with fun activities, not to mention the delicious food and yogarts (I think I had one everyday). We also all went to movies to see "My Sisters Keeper" which was totally different from the book! The ocean was way too cold for me so I enjoyed the hot tub in their apartment complex. I was pleasantly surprised to see how clean Garreths apartment was. Jess is a domestic little wife! We even had to take our shoes off so that her carpets stay clean. You go girl! I feel so lucky that my children are all happy in their marraiges.

Garreth called George to wish him on Fathers Day. He said they were having so much fun in the Dominican Republic. They swam with sharks, were followed by Dolphins, rode four wheelers around the town, and went white river rafting. They come home tomorrow, Just in time for the open house. In the meantime I have lots of preperations.

Sat, 13th June. We had just arrived in Utah in time to go to Jessica's bridal shower (or should I say kitchen tea?) hosted by my daughters at the Morgans home. We had fun while the men all went to give Garreth a tool party.

Sun, 14th June. After church we were invited by Jessica's aunt for dinner. After dinner the soon to be married couple opened gifts given to them by family. They received some really lovely gifts from family. We gave them a down comforter as well as all the bedding they will need. Jessica's aunt gave something nicer............a HAND MADE quilt!

Mon, 15th June. Jessica received her endowments and George took everyone to P.F. Changs (a resturant) afterwards to celebrate.

Tues, 16th June. We gave the rehersal dinner, at the Morgan's friends home. The men played basketball. The very soon to be married couple gave everyone gifts, and speeches were made by the parents and some of the siblings of the bride and groom.

Wed, 17th June. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple. All my children together in the temple. This was very special to me. The reception was beautiful. I wish I had taken pictures. There must have been 300 people there.

Thurs, 18th June. We were invited to the Morgan's home to see the married couple open all their gifts. They received some beautiful things. Thanks to Christina Mangelson for the lovely dinner service.
